HISTORY
The Philippine Dance Cup is an offshoot of the once ABAP (Association of Ballet academies, Philippines) Dance Cup which was a competition created in 2008, to challenge the dance mettle of students under the mantle of the affiliate schools of the association. It became apparent that in order to serve a wider audience of schools outside of the association, the move to become a separate entity was borne in 2012 in the form of the Philippine Dance Cup. Since then it has established itself as one of the country’s premier, solo and ensemble competitions, promoting excellence in the art of dance.
The Philippine Dance Cup is a nationwide competing platform attracting leading schools in the dance industry while acknowledging and rewarding future generations of eminent artistic talent. This performing arts event is attended by renowned dance critics and artistic directors of various dance companies. Since its inception, awardees have been offered contracts with major national and international companies, and are enjoying distinct recognition in the international dance arena.
In 2014, the Philippine Dance Cup forged a significant partnership with the College of Saint Benilde–School of Design and Arts (CSB–SDA), making its home at the university’s quarters. The CSB–SDA Theater became the perfect backdrop to the Philippine Dance Cup’s objectives of mounting the first–rate dance competition in the country. This partnership was made successful because of a shared vision of bringing about a renaissance of the arts in the country.
The Philippine Dance Cup hosts competitions every other year with genre modules of classical ballet, contemporary dance, and street dance. Local and international judges comprise the adjudicating panel. The Philippine Dance Cup is committed to developing the competing landscape in the country, supporting the growing number of dance educators dedicated to enhancing their teaching and mentoring skills, and creating further training prospects for talented dancers through scholarships to prestigious schools, subsidies, and employment possibilities.
